Wonders, they say, will never end in this world; that is the first instinct that would strike anyone that gets to hear of this weird worship where pilgrims gather at a waterfall naked, all in the name of worshipping God.
Well, this is Saut-d'Eau, a waterfall in the municipality of Mirebalais Arrondissement, in the centre of Haiti.
According to historians, area holds cultural significance to both Catholic and Vodoo practitioners because in the 19th century, it is believed that the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel appeared on a palm tree there.
A French priest, afraid of the superstition this would inspire, cut the tree down, but it nonetheless became an important religious destination for Haitians, akin to the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico.
Annually, the falls are the site of a large, important religious pilgrimage, during the festival of Our Lady of Carmel, from July 14–16.
A Eucharistic rite is held during the festival, as well as various vodoo rituals, but the penultimate devotional activity is bathing naked in the waters of the falls, and asking favors of the Virgin or Erzulie.
It is believed that anyone that bathes naked in the water would have his or her prayers answered instantly.
